Relationship - Trust Measurement

You can't manage other people's beliefs. You can only manage the relationship you have with them.

As much as we might like to think we can manage other people's perceptions of us, in reality, all we can manage is our relationship with them. And in order for you to manage that relationship, you need to measure it. Professors Jim and Laurie Grunig have developed half a dozen metrics to determine the health of one's relationships. Using those established metrics (click here for their complete paper on measuring relationships), we measure your relationships with your internal or external publics. Using established survey techniques, we determine the degree to which they trust your organization, the degree to which they feel the relationship is mutually beneficial and the degree to which they are willing to invest in furthering the relationship.

Whether you are in government relations, employee relations, media relations or community relations, you need to undestand what is working and contributing to those relationships. More importantly, you need to understand what ISN'T working and what needs to be fixed.

It is professionally irresponsible for managers of [the public relations and public affairs areas]not to measure the effectiveness of what they and their staff do.
